#9 Finding Feeds

Now that you have a newsreader (your Bloglines account), you can begin adding other newsfeeds that interest you. There are several ways you can locate newsfeeds:
  • When visiting your favorite websites -- look for news feed icons that indicate the website provides it. Often a feed icon will be displayed somewhere in the navigation bar of the site. (Here's an image that contains a sampling of several feed icons).

  • Use Blogline's Search tool - Bloglines recently expanded search tool lets you search for news feeds in addition to posts, citations and the web. Use the Search for Feeds option to locate RSS feeds you might be interested in.

  • Other Search tools that can help you find feeds:

    • Topix.net - This search tool allows you to locate recent newsfeed items based upon keyword or phrase searching. The tool focuses specifically on news and media outlet RSS feeds for information, not weblogs.

    • Syndic8.com - Syndic8 is an open directory of RSS feeds that contains thousands of RSS feeds that users have submitted.

    • Technorati - Technorati is a popular blog finding tool that lets you search for blogs. Since RSS feeds are inherent to all blogging tools, Technorati Blog Search can help you find RSS feeds for topic specific blogs you may be interested in. Additonal Resource: Technorati Tutorial on finding and adding your blog

Discovery Excercise:
  1. Explore some of the search tools noted above that can help you locate some news feeds.

  2. Create a blog post about your experience. Don't know what to blog about? Here some questions to think about ...
Which method of finding feeds did you find easiest to use?
Which Search tool was the easiest for you? Which was more confusing?
What kind of useful feeds did you find in your travels? Or what kind of unusual ones did you find?
What other tools or ways did you find to locate newsfeeds?

  3. Post a comment to this blog to let us know you've completed this discovery exercise!

EXTRA STUFF -- Feed icon information:

In Febuary of 2006, the adoption of a standard feed icon among websites and browsers finally began to assist in stopping the madness and confusion caused by so many variations. So far this icon has been adopted by many websites and browers, including Opera and FireFox, where it displays in the address bar:

Internet Explorer 7.0 has this as well. For more information about this emerging new standard, see Feedicons.com

My blogline and subscriptions can be found at: http://www.bloglines.com/public/CurtB2

The first Youtube training video on newsfeeds was annoying because the speaker was trying to emphasize the speedier characteristics of all this but the video kept stalling. The 3 minute video took over 10 minutes to view.
I subscribe to several newsfeeds and a few JPL blogs. I found some interesting material searching in my areas of interest. I especially enjoyed the Flickr photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidkendal/3000562608/in/pool-54451451@N00 but saw no reason to subscribe to it.
Right now my impression is I would rather bookmark the blogs since I have often subscribed to newsfeeds of one sort or another only to delete them with only a cursory glance to get rid of an overfilled mailbox. For me bookmarks work best although I can see why a few newsfeeds would be useful.
Since I am a teen librarian, I added http://www.gryffindorgazette.com/feed/ to my subscriptions. I did find a Beedle the Bard contest which awarded a free trip to Edinburgh to see J. K. Rowling in a related site. Nevertheless, my original impression still stands since there is a lot of digging to do to find the occasional worthwhile link. Not something to do unless one is really interested in the subject and doesn't mind the digging. Very uncertain as to why some blogs, bloglines are posted at all. Must have been a homework assignment. :)

In case you really are interested and want to see my blogline, see the post on my blog http://www.jaxscots.blogspot.com/
and click on the link. I tried copying and pasting the UrL from my comment and it went nowhere. It works from my blog, however. Watch out for the frog and try my cake recipe.
Much thanks to Ed for his advice or I would still be stumbling through this week's assignment.

I have too much to read already, so I don't need to search for more, but at least I know how others could find RSS feeds now.

Feedster doesn't work. The technorati tutorial is very slow. However, I did find a video on technorati that I posted on my blog: hhtp://terryandrover.blogspot.com.

Signing up for all the feeds seemed like a good idea at the time, but except for Unshelved, I prefer looking up the news websites
(but we'll see).
